The Club

Lewis Car Club has been in existence since 1973 with the purpose of promoting motorsport and motoring in general in the Western Isles.

The Club organises the prestigious Rally Hebrides, first staged in 2008. The rally has grown in size in terms of stage miles and entrants. Rally Hebrides 2011 raised £10,674 for Macmillan Cancer Support (Western Isles) and we are delighted that Macmillan have agreed to work alongside us for Rally Hebrides 2012

The first quarter mile drag race of 2012 took place on June 9th, with all the money raised going to the ‘CRY’ charity, and the second race took place on 21st July – with all money raised going to local charities.

Lewis Car Club also run an annual Autosolo and Autotest Championship with regular events, bringing affordable motorsport to the Western Isles. For 2012 we have manage to secure local event sponsorship for these championships.

This site will hopefully be updated regularly with details about Lewis Car Club  Events, Rally Hebrides, the LCC Autosolo Championship and Quarter Mile Drag Races.  Scheduling information and event overviews will be displayed on this home page but please navigate to the dedicated pages for these events to learn more.

Early Club events included an Autocross Championship on Barvas Machair, Hillclimbs at Bennadrove and Autotests at Stornoway Airport, Marybank and Arnish.

In the early 1990’s, Lewis Car Club organised a number of Navigational Road Rallies and loose surface Autotests at its newly acquired Lochs Road gravel circuit.

In 1999, the Club, in partnership with the Stornoway Trust, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Bardon Hebrides, developed its Lochs Road site. The site was let out to a newly formed company who worked to develop Lewis Karting Centre – a premier 650m by 6m outdoor karting circuit with ancillary driver training facilities.  In 2001, Lewis Car Club was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee and Registered Scottish Charity.

Lewis Car Club is now very active, organising the prestigious Rally Hebrides – a 30 car untimed Stage Rally – in August each year along with a fiercely contested Autosolo Championship and an annual Quarter Mile Drag Race series.  Proceeds from these events go to local Charities.

2007 - Lewis Car Club organised a Motorsport Day which led to the formation of stornowaycruise, a local content, online community for young performance car drivers and enthusiasts.  In June 2008,the first organised Quarter Mile Drag Race on Stornoway Airport where £6,200 was raised for Bethesda Nursing Home and Hospice.

2008 - In August 2008, Lewis Car Club organised Bethesda Rally Hebrides, the first ever Closed Stage Rally in the Western Isles.  10 Scottish Championship cars and drivers participated, including 2008 Scottish Rally Champion, Jimmy Girvan, and cars ranged from the ex Carlos Sainz Impreza 555 to a Metro 6R4 and a selection of Mk2 Escorts.  Stages were run through the stunning grounds of Lews Castle and over the Lewis Karting Centre circuit.  £10,000 (before expenses) was raised for Bethesda Nursing Home and Hospice.

2009 - In 2009, Lewis Car Club again organised Rally Hebrides, expanding the field to 20 cars and running two additional Stages over Melbost Farm.  Rally Hebrides realised £15,000 (before expenses) for Macmillan Cancer Support Western Isles.  The Club also imported a National Hot Rod Association spec Drag Timing System from Portatree of Massachusetts, USA and organised a Quarter Mile Drag Race using this equipment.  The race took place on Stornoway Airport by kind permission of Highlands & Islands Airports Limited and a total of £5,500 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support Western Isles.

Later in the year, a series of Autosolos took place at Lewis Karting Centre.  These proved to be popular with the members to the extent that a Club Autosolo Championship was developed for 2010.

Lewis Car Club is a Company Limited by Guarantee and Registered Scottish Charity. The Club is affiliated to the RAC’s Motor Sports Association and remains committed to the development of motorsport in the Hebrides and to the advancement of driving standards.
